Everyman

Philip Roth's twenty-seventh book takes its title from an anonymous fifteenth-century English allegorical play whose drama centres on the summoning of the living to death and whose hero, Everyman, is intended to be the personification of mankind. The fate of Roth's Everyman is traced from his first shocking confrontation with death on the idyllic beaches of his childhood summers and during his hospitalisation as a nine-year-old surgical patient through the crises of health that come close to killing him as a vigorous adult, and into his old age, when he is undone by the death and deterioration of his contemporaries and relentlessly stalked by his own menacing physical woes. A successful commercial advertising artist with a New York ad agency, he is the father of two sons who despise him and a daughter who adores him, the beloved brother of a good man whose physical well-being comes to arouse his bitter envy, and the lonely ex-husband of three very different women with whom he's made a mess of marriage. "Everyman" is a painful human story of the regret and loss and stoicism of a man who becomes what he does not want to be. The terrain of this savagely sad short novel is the human body, and its subject is the common experience that terrifies us all.

"A brilliantly compressed account of a life." -- Christopher Tayler, The Sunday Telegraph, Seven"Anything new by Roth is a welcome treat…the book is full of wit and insight" -- Tatler, Sebastian Shakespeare"Every sentence and every paragraph works with the coiled precision of the watch mechanisms that the narrators father repairs" -- Tim Martin, Independent on Sunday"Unexpectedly moving and written in an inviting easy story-telling style…" -- The Economist"it is worth mentioning what a readable writer Roth is…has always had the knack of drawing his reader along" -- TLS, Benjamin Markovits"paints a rich portrait" -- Daily Mail, Michael Arditti"sombre but always lively novella" -- Monday Independent rvd by Paul bailey"this is as dark a novel as Roth has written yet it reads like a dream" -- Sunday Herald, Alan TaylorA very distinguished novel…presents the reader with life’s one certainty and does so with great power." -- Leo Robson, Expressfascinating family saga which reveals a corner of American Culture -- Sunday Express

Monitoring the Standards of Education: Papers in Honor of John P. Keeves 0

Monitoring the standards of school achievement is a topic which has been subject to increasing attention of late. This book aims to add clarity and fuel to this ongoing debate by answering such questions as: Why should standards of education be monitored? Which are the major steps to be undertaken in setting and monitoring cognitive and affective achievement standards? Which indicators can be used and, how should they be measured?

This book takes stock of the best available knowledge and expertise in the domain of monitoring standards, tested both in highly and less developed countries. For every aspect, the best theory is offered, without unnecessary technicalities, in the light of the state-of-the-art, with the clarity that characterizes scholars who are masters of their field. Monitoring the Standards of Education should be on the desk of every person concerned by the problem.D. de Landscheere, President, International Academy of Education, 1994.This is an important book for those concerned with comparative education, and has something to say to those with more parochial interests too...an excellent introduction to the focus of the book. It has a refreshing clarity and directness in dealing with concepts and definitions in a difficult field. Similarly, it offers real insights into the forces, political, economic, and others which have influenced the growth of educational monitoring, especially in the international arena...technically impeccable, and written in a way which makes it accessible to the intelligent layman... I would recommend it as an essential reference for all those concerned with comparative education, and of interest to anyone involvedwith the the techniques of educational evaluation in general.British Journal of Educational StudiesTerry Crooks, University of Otago...well presented and readable.... --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

Praying the Bible: An Introduction to Lectio Divina

Today, the Church is experiencing a revival of interest in the Bible. The knowledge and practice of lectio divina are becoming more widespread, not only in monastic and religious communities, but also among all the people of God. Archbishop Magrassi's book is a classic on the subject. It introduces us to an atmosphere of faith in which the Church, for twelve centuries, was nourished on the Word of God. Out of his vast knowledge of the Fathers and medieval monastic authors, Magrassi has created a synthesis of the elements that make up the unique and singular experience of lectio divina.

Culture & Christianity Negotiated in Hindu Society

Sorry, description is temporarily unavailable.

Ole Kirchheiner has made a very important contribution to the limited body of research available about the Nepal church. Yet it is one of the most fascinating stories of modern mission history! Working from the case study of Asha Church in a typically rural area in the centre of the country, but whose congregants have begun to move into the urban centres, he has made a fascinating study of how these recent converts have retained their essential 'Nepaliness' while becoming genuine followers of Christ. This work deserves a wide readership, and hopefully will stimulate further research on the important questions raised.

Beyond Dracula: Bram Stoker's Fiction and its Cultural Context

Beyond Dracula represents an important critical departure from the customary psychoanalytical approach to the writings of Bram Stoker. Reading Stoker as a participant in Victorian and Edwardian cultural life, the volume examines the breadth of Stoker's novel-length fiction, as well as his journalism, biographical writings and short fiction. In its considerations of questions of religion, censorship, gender and medicine, the volume will interest not merely readers of the Gothic but those involved in the study of Victorian and Edwardian culture.

The Oxford Handbook of Theological Ethics (Oxford Handbooks in Religion and Theology)

The Oxford Handbooks series is a major new initiative in academic publishing. Each volume offers an authoritative and up-to-date survey of original research in a particular subject area. Specially commissioned essays from leading figures in the discipline give critical examinations of the progress and direction of debates.

The Oxford Handbook of Theological Ethicsoffers the most authoritative and compelling guide to the discipline. Thirty of the world's most distinguished specialists provide new essays in order to offer a survey of and analysis of the subject. Ethics is first placed firmly within the Christian theological tradition, from which thought and action can never be neatly separated. Four sections then explore the sources of Christian moral knowledge (scripture, divine commands, church tradition, reason and natural law, experience); the structure of the Christian life (vocation, virtue, rules, responsibility, death); the spirit of the Christian life (faith, hope, love); and the spheres of the Christian life (government, family, economy, culture, church). The final section of the Handbook contains essays discussing and evaluating certain scholarly works that have in the past influentially offered (different) visions of how best to structure the field of theological ethics. Unlike any other book now available, the Handbook's unrivalled breadth and depth make it the definitive reference work for all students and academics who want to explore more fully essential topics in Christian ethics.

...a very valuable schlorly resource that should be in every theological library and will be a valuable reference text for all advanced courses in Christian ethics. (Michael Northcott Expository Times)

An odyssey of the heart begins the moment theater director Lucas Cameron discovers a box of letters left behind by his deceased grandmother, the famous stage actress Constance Bernhardt. The letters were written by her protege Jessica Fontaine, who disappeared from the stage years before. Even in the midst of his busy world - staging a new Broadway play, coping with the overwhelming needs of his former wife and the social ambitions of his current girlfriend - Luke finds himself returning again and again to the letters, recognizing in them a deeply passionate young woman discovering herself and the magic of the theater. Luke begins to realize that he has fallen in love with the woman who wrote them. Finally he can bear it no longer - and tracks down the elusive Jessica Fontaine. But when he travels to her hideaway on Lopez Island off the coast of Washington, nothing is as he expected it. In one brief, magical week, Luke and Jessica face emotions and decisions that turn their worlds upside down.

It's All About the Guest: Exceeding Expectations in Business and in Life, the Davio's Way

When's the last time you picked up a business book that was so engaging you couldn't put it down? Via entertaining stories from his 30-plus years as a top restaurateur, Steve DiFillippo illustrates essential nuggets of wisdom--find your passion, pay attention, leave your ego behind, keep your eye on the money, and more--advice that is applicable in any business and in everyone's life.

"I have thoroughly enjoyed Steve's cooking during my career in Boston and had even greater pleasure getting to know Steve. Exceeding expectations is what he does best. I am sure people will enjoy this book as much as their experience at one of Steve's restaurants." -- Tom Brady, NFL Quarterback "Steve is an amazing restaurateur and, with IAATG, he generously shares some of the secrets to his success. A fun read for anyone interested in the business, passionate about food, or just curious how life's lessons present themselves in some unexpected places." -- Ming Tsai "This book may be all about the guest, but it is also all about the extraordinary attention to detail in every aspect of running a successful restaurant that Steve DiFillippo does so brilliantly in this very personal account of his journey of hard work from the bottom up to head of a restaurant empire that epitomizes his passionate love of food." -- Mary Ann Esposito, Host PBS Ciao Italia and author of "Ciao Italia Family Classics""Going to Davio's is an amazing experience. The attitude of the staff is always upbeat and attentive, the food is consistently superb. Steve has created a great business and has been able to replicate it in location after location with great training, motivation, and execution. This is the best business book that I have read since Tom Peters' "In Search of Excellence. "I believe that we are all in a service industry and this book is a must read -- it's quick, easy and funny. There are also a few great recipes! -- Herb Chambers, one of America's largest automotive retailers"Steve is the consummate host. As restaurateurs both starting out in Boston in the late '80s, we share a passion for this industry as well as an enduring friendship. Through this book you will gain insight into what it takes to run a successful restaurant as Steve guides you through all aspects of the process, sharing stories from his own personal journey. It's all about bringing people around the table, and Steve always has room at his table to welcome you." --Todd English, chef/restaurateur"A veritable handbook for anyone considering opening their own restaurant, DiFillippo pulls back the curtain to share his experiences--good and bad--and offers specific, distilled advice. A foodie practically from birth, DiFillippo did time in other restaurants before assuming ownership of Davio's, an 80 seat Italian restaurant in Boston, when he was just 24. At the time, Davio's was on its last legs and he quickly learned why: financial mismanagement, rampant drug use, theft and decrepit equipment had undermined the restaurant, forcing DiFillippo to make some quick decisions and set the tone for employees as well as customers. Attention to the smallest details, from bathrooms to wineglasses and the desire to go the extra mile for customers are just some of the lasting changes that have helped the restaurant expand to other locations and build loyalty. Budgeting, problem employees, food critics, labor laws, food costing, and knowing when to close up shop aren't as juicy as stories about hanging out with Julia Child (which he also includes) but they'll stick with serious readers a lot longer and help budding restaurateurs get a much more realistic feel of the road ahead. Anyone seriously considering entering the restaurant or hospitality business would do well to spend some time with DiFillippo's entertaining and insightful book." -- Publishers Weekly starred review"A fun read, with a huge soul and some pretty darn good life lessons."" -- EdibleBoston.com"I have thoroughly enjoyed Steve's cooking during my career in Boston and had even greater pleasure getting to know Steve. Exceeding expectations is what he does best. I am sure people will enjoy this book as much as their experience at one of Steve's restaurants." -- Tom Brady, NFL Quarterback "Steve is an amazing restaurateur and, with IAATG, he generously shares some of the secrets to his success.

Diary of a Witchcraft Shop

"When you find yourself on a London platform shouting into your mobile, 'We haven't got enough demons! Do you want me to order some more?' as folk quietly edge away from you - you know you're running a witchcraft shop."Full of amusing anecdotes and witty observations, Diary of a Witchcraft Shop is a delight, and Trevor Jones and Liz Williams the most congenial of hosts. If Bill Bryson ever decided to settle down, embrace paganism and open a witchcraft shop, this is surely the sort of book that would result.Yet Diary of a Witchcraft Shop is far more than just an amusing romp. The book offers a glimpse into the pagan world, one that isn't sensationalist or melodramatic but is instead considered and intelligent, while providing insight into the unique community that is Glastonbury. The narrative is bursting with surprise, delight and humour, but also has its darker moments, as we share twelve months in the company of Liz and Trevor, complete with visits to the Houses of Parliament, Ireland, and Brittany, not to mention Shetland ponies interrupting druidic ritual and a TARDIS manifesting in the most unlikely of places... No, this isn't fiction, honestly...

Title: Friendship With God An Uncommon Dialogue

The first book in a new series by the multimillion-copy bestselling author of Conversations with God.

Neale Donald Walsch has changed the way millions of Americans think about God. His Conversations with God series, book 1, book 2, and book 3, have all been New York Times bestsellers- book 1 for over two years.

The essence of Neale Donald Walsch's message lies at the heart of faith- the sacred place in every person, where he stands alone with his God. Walsch urges each of us to forge our own unique relationship with God, a God who is everywhere and speaks to us in all we do. It is up to us to stop and listen. It is up to us to respond...to begin the conversation. And a conversation is the first step, just as in any relationship, in establishing trust, in building friendship, in creating communion.

In Friendship with God, Neale Donald Walsch shares the next part of his journey, and leads us to deepen and strengthen our own bonds with God. He honors our heart's desire: a closer connection, richer and fuller. A friendship with God.

Neale Donald Walsch grew up fearing God, especially after his mother, a neighbourhood mystic, was caught reading cards for a friend. His mother was "trafficking with the devil", according to Walsch's deeply religious aunt, and as a result, "God will send her straight to hell".

Speed the Dawn (Donovan Nash Thriller)

In the style of Clive Cussler, best-selling author Philip Donlay climbs to a new height of terror in his 8th Donovan Nash thriller.

Hundreds of white-hot meteor fragments plunge toward Earth near Monterey Bay, California. Huge fires ignite the tinder-dry landscape and, as the sun sets, the power grid collapses and the fires grow, illuminating a nightmare created in hell itself. Donovan Nash realizes he is trapped.

Injured and growing desperate, his options dwindling, Donovan fights to keep himself and a small band of survivors alive until dawn, when they can make one last attempt to escape the inferno.

Meanwhile, Donovan's wife, Dr. Lauren McKenna, working with the Pentagon as well as the Forest Service, envisions a bold approach to stop the fire from spreading all the way to the Bay Area and the seven million residents living there. She's terrified that, if not executed perfectly, her plan could cause the death of thousands of people--including Donovan.

The Princess Bride

Beautiful, flaxen-haired Buttercup has fallen for Westley, the farm boy, and when he departs to make his fortune, she vows never to love another. So when she hears that his ship has been captured by the Dread Pirate Roberts - who never leaves survivors - her heart is broken. But her charms draw the attention of the relentless Prince Humperdinck who wants a wife and will go to any lengths to have Buttercup. So starts a fairytale like no other, of fencing, fighting, torture, poison, true love, hate, revenge, giants, hunters, bad men, good men, beautifulest ladies, snakes, spiders, beasts, chases, escapes, lies, truths, passion and miracles.

First published well, in 1973 actually, this book spawned the Rob Reiner-directed cult film of the same name. It's a tongue-in-cheek fairytale of love, life, action, death and life again. Featuring the obligatory handsome Prince and supremely beautiful princess, it also boasts a Spanish sword wizard, the Zoo of Death, a chocolate-coated resurrection pill and lots of villains, who span the spectrum from evil, through even more evil to (gasp) most evil. And then there's Fezzik, the gentle giant addicted to rhyming.

Love and Friendship

Sorry, description is temporarily unavailable.

Love and Friendship is one of the early works of Jane Austen and presents the misfortunes of a young woman and her husband, who listened only to the voice of their hearts and married hastily, without having the consent of the groom's father. In telling the story of the two, who fell in love at first sight, deciding to face the disapproval of the young man's relatives, especially his father and aunt, who aspired to a much better union for him, the writer uses the epistolary style. The novel is a collection of letters, most of them written by Laura, the heroin, and addressed to Marianne, the daughter of her best friend, Isabel. The letter opening the book is from Isabel to Laura, the former asking the latter, now 55 years old, to share a bit of her life experience to her young daughter, Marianne, so that the latter may learn the valuable life lessons coming from the story the easy way, not the hard way, as Laura herself did.The heroin kindly accepts, so she begins to write to Marianne, describing for her the circumstances that led to her meeting her future husband, a very handsome young man named Edward Lindsay, and also telling about their hasty decision to marry after only a few days. In Edward's case, although it is implied that he also loved Laura very much, the decision was also motivated by his desire to defy his father, who planned to marry him with the rich Lady Dorothea. The young couple goes to London, living in the house of Augustus, a friend of Edward, who also disobeyed his family when he married Sophia, the woman he loved. Although, in the beginning, everything seems to be perfect, a series of tragic events turn the peaceful life of the two happy couples upside down."Run mad as often as you choose, but do not faint!"

The French Cook: Soups and Stews

Anyone who likes to cook French will find this a must-have for her/his culinary library. Following a brief discussion of equipment needed for making soups and stews, Herrick teaches about the six basic stocks. Then come the luscious recipes for classic French soups this pistou, onion, cheese with croutons, vegetable, salt cod and potato, roasted tomato, and lentil. There are recipes for delicate consommés as well as a plethora of creamy soups corn, mushroom, chestnut, oyster, and fresh pea. Rounding out the selection are hearty stews Beef Bourguignon, Cassoulet, Pot Roast, and Fruity Curried Lamb Stew. Not to be missed are the delightful cold soups vichychoisse with asparagus, cantaloupe, and cold red pepper. All are prepared in classic French style but with Ms. Herrick s creative twists on familiar French offerings

Next, the book delves into the intricacies of making complex soups. Growing upon the stocks earlier described and building the soup with layers of flavor, she takes you through each step with amazing grace and agility. Simple, yet important tips such as how to core fennel or how to remove garlic cores, help to establish the success of recreating her vision. The Aigo Bouido (Garlic Soup) requires proper garlic preparation, as it uses two whole heads of garlic. Understanding how garlic flavors influence an infused soup such as this is imperative, as leaving a green garlic core can ruin the dish and make it bitter. The Soupe au Cantaloup et au Champagne avec Prosciutto et Basilic sounds incredibly hard to make and complex. However, Holly's delicious combination of cantaloupe, champagne, prosciutto and basil is surprisingly easy to make. The creamy soup, served chilled, is wonderful with a bit of ham in the middle.--Stephanie Smith"thewanderingeyetravelandculture.blogspot.com" (09/05/2014)Meticulously researched and charmingly presented, this book is chock-full of fall and wintery inspiration for your kitchen. Herrick's obvious love for France shines through on every page, from quotes on French cooking ... "Bouillabaisse is only good because [it is] cooked by the French, who, if they cared to try, could produce an excellent and nutritious substitute out of cigar stumps and empty match boxes." - Norman Douglas, 1868-1952, from Siren Land ... to recipes for the quintessential French onion soup. (This is the recipe I am most excited to try; we've had a stint of hot weather recently, and I haven't yet brought myself to spend the time over a hot stove that the recipe - and end result - deservedly demand.) And then, of course, there's the photography.--Meagan Davenport"thecurriednut.com" (09/23/2014)

I Saw It: Ilya Selvinsky and the Legacy of Bearing Witness to the Shoah (Studies in Russian and Slavic Literatures, Cultures, and History)

In this ground-breaking book, based on archival and field research and previously unknown historical evidence, Maxim D. Shrayer introduces the work of Ilya Selvinsky, the first Jewish-Russian poet to depict the Holocaust (Shoah) in the occupied Soviet territories. In January 1942, while serving as a military journalist, Selvinsky witnessed the immediate aftermath of the massacre of thousands of Jews outside the Crimean city of Kerch, and thereafter composed and published poems about it. Shrayer painstakingly reconstructs the details of the Nazi atrocities witnessed by Selvinsky, and shows that in 1943, as Stalin’s regime increasingly refused to report the annihilation of Jews in the occupied territories, Selvinsky paid a high price for his writings and actions. This book features over 60 rare photographs and illustrations and includes translations of Selvinsky’s principal Shoah poems.

“This beautifully close reading of a major Soviet poet restores for us an important vision of the Holocaust.”—Timothy Snyder, Yale University“Ilya Selvinsky was a Soviet Jewish poet writer who wrote explicitly about the Holocaust at a time when most Soviet writers avoided the subject. Though Selvinsky was in and out of political trouble, his undeniable talent and Stalin’s grudging admiration allowed him to survive. Maxim D. Shrayer tells his story vividly, comprehensively and convincingly. Unlike many literary studies, this deeply researched book is accessible, gripping and free of jargon. We learn not only about Selvinsky and other wartime writers, but also about Soviet policy toward the Holocaust and how it changed; the tense relations between the Party-State and writers; and the complexities of Jewish identities in the USSR.”—Zvi Gitelman, University of Michigan“I Saw It is a major contribution to our knowledge and understanding of how Soviet Jewish writers and the regime in general responded to the Nazi massacres of Jews in German-occupied Soviet territory. As a soldier, poet, and journalist, Ilya Selvinsky was often on the front line, struggling to comprehend the enormity of the destruction and suffering around him.  Based on painstaking and comprehensive research, Maxim D. Shrayer does a superb job of conveying the challenges of being a Soviet patriot and a Jew in the face of Hitler’s onslaught.”—Joshua Rubenstein, author of Tangled Loyalties: The Life and Times of Ilya Ehrenburg“Soviet Jews, serving on the Eastern front, were the first to document the German war against the Jews. The most memorable response was, indeed, the first: a Russian-language poem so immediate, so personal and so graphic, that even Stalin and his henchmen could not suppress the poem, nor, try as they did, the courageous poet who authored it. This is the remarkable story, never before told, of the Jewish-Russian poet Ilya Selvinsky, who despite all odds first taught his fellow Jews and Russians how to mourn their incalculable losses.”—David G. Roskies, Jewish Theological Seminary, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem“Comprehensive, meticulously researched, erudite, and up-to-date, with sober assessments and insightful interpretive comments, Maxim D. Shrayer’s study of Ilya Selvinsky closes gaps both in the history of Soviet Russian literature and in the history of the literature of the Holocaust.”—Leona Toker, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem“Maxim D. Shrayer’s searing account of the struggles of a famous Soviet-Jewish poet and military officer, Ilya Selvinsky, is among the most original and illuminating studies of the Holocaust as experienced by a generation of Soviet intellectuals who witnessed the atrocities and were at the forefront of Stalin’s propaganda war against Nazism. Shrayer’s research on Selvinsky is impressive and stunning. Scholars and students alike will appreciate Shrayer’s  presentation of Selvinsky’s moving poetry, revealing diary entries, and rare family photographs—all of this rich material Shrayer contextualizes in a deep historical and literary analysis of this era's fanatical idealism and genocide. Standing at the edge of a mass grave of Jewish victims in his native region of Crimea at Kerch, Selvinsky followed his conscience by writing the poem, “I Saw It,” to testify, and express his outrage and grief. In this penetrating book of Selvinsky's struggles, Shrayer pays a double tribute—to a shattered idealist and patriot who captured the soul of his people in his poetry, and to the victims of the Shoah whose voices like those of a generation of Soviet Jewish intellectual-witnesses were muted by postwar Soviet censors who suppressed the Holocaust.”—Wendy Lower, Claremont McKenna College“In I Saw It, Maxim D. Shrayer meticulously and unflinchingly chronicles the Nazi massacre of Jews in Kerch, Crimea, and its reflection in Ilya Selvinsky’s extraordinarily powerful poems. Selvinsky, a convinced communist generally willing to compromise, suffered considerably for his stubborn attempts to bring the Shoah to the attention of the Soviet reading public. Shrayer brings together social, political, historical, and poetic questions, producing a memorable book that will fascinate a broad range of readers.”—Michael Wachtel, Princeton University"A sophisticated literary analysis of Ilya Selvinsky's texts, Maxim D. Shrayer's book demonstrates a deep knowledge of the history of the Holocaust in the USSR. It is the first study of poet's career in the context of Shoah memorization. Shrayer's book must be published in Russian translation." -Ilya Altman, Russian Holocaust Center, Russian State University for the Humanities“Shrayer (Boston College) is the author of several highly-praised books about Russia, the USSR, and Jewish Soviet literature; this new book is equally praiseworthy. Its subject is perhaps unfamiliar to most Holocaust scholars—and for that reason alone, this study is welcome. Selvinsky (1899–68), a Soviet Jew, was a devoted Marxist, an intellectual, and a well-regarded poet. He spent much of WWII as a soldier on the front lines, serving as a reporter and in combat. Selvinksy was a witness to the Nazi Einsatzgruppen massacre of as many as 7,000 Jews in a ditch in Kerch in the Crimea, and wrote two famous poems about the 1941 event: “Kerch” and “I Saw It.” Shrayer offers readers a comprehensive, thoughtful introduction to Selvinsky’s biography, an astute account of Stalinist Russia’s wavering attitude toward Jews, and careful analysis of several of Selvinksy’s poems. This volume is greatly enhanced by 64 illustrations—photographs of the site of the massacre (then and now) and of Selvinsky and his literary circle, and maps and other documents—as well as the texts, in Russian and English, of the two Kerch poems. The bibliography is a testament to the meticulous research Shrayer conducted, in archives and on site." —E. R. Baer, Gustavus Adolphus College, in CHOICE: Current Reviews for Academic Libraries, November 2013“What does it mean to bear witness to the Shoah? What does it mean to bear witness to the genocide of Jews in the Soviet Union? These two questions are at the center of Maxim Shrayer’s illuminating study of the Jewish-Russian poet Ilya Selvinsky’s work and biography that combines literary analysis with historical and biographical research. Shrayer excels in his response to questions that have occupied . . . scholars of Soviet-Jewish history and of the Nazi genocide in German-occupied Soviet territories. The crux for the latter achievement is a detailed reconstruction of the effects that the poet’s account of the genocide had on the larger public and on his own life and career. . . . The book is valuable to broad audiences interested in the history of the Holocaust, the history of Soviet Russian-Jewish literature, and the literature of the Holocaust. As the first study of a Soviet-Jewish poet’s career who publicly spoke about the Holocaust, the book is an important contribution to recent efforts to scrutinize how the Shoah was represented and perceived in the Soviet Union.” —Anika Walke, Washington University in St. Louis. The Black Cat (Konemann Classics)

These four short stories of murder and mystery tell the tales of terrible people who lead strange lives. "Penguin Readers" is a series of simplified novels, film novelizations and original titles that introduce students at all levels to the pleasures of reading in English. Originally designed for teaching English as a foreign language, the series' combination of high interest level and low reading age makes it suitable for both English-speaking teenagers with limited reading skills and students of English as a second language. Many titles in the series also provide access to the pre-20th century literature strands of the National Curriculum English Orders. "Penguin Readers" are graded at seven levels of difficulty, from "Easystarts" with a 200-word vocabulary, to Level 6 (Advanced) with a 3000-word vocabulary. In addition, titles fall into one of three sub-categories: "Contemporary", "Classics" or "Originals". At the end of each book there is a section of enjoyable exercises focusing on vocabulary building, comprehension, discussion and writing. Some titles in the series are available with an accompanying audio cassette, or in a book and cassette pack. Additionally, selected titles have free accompanying "Penguin Readers Factsheets" which provide stimulating exercise material for students, as well as suggestions for teachers on how to exploit the Readers in class.

Lights and Shadows of Spiritualism

This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the original. Due to its age, it may contain imperfections such as marks, notations, marginalia and flawed pages. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions that are true to the original work.

Daniel Dunglas Home (1833–1886) was a charismatic medium whose seances were attended by European royalty and numerous Victorian celebrities. This volume, first published in 1877, is an evocative examination of spiritualism, simultaneously attacking fraudulent mediums and celebrating 'true' practitioners. A fascinating encounter with the self-proclaimed 'Grandfather of English Spiritualism'. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

Cain's Blood

When clones of infamous serial killers escape from a secret government facility, it's up to a former Army Ranger to stop them...with the help of a teenage killer clone.

The DNA of the world's most notorious serial killers--including Ted Bundy, The Son of Sam, and The Boston Strangler--has been cloned by the US Department of Defense to develop a new breed of bioweapon. Now in Phase Three, the program includes dozens of young men who have no clue as to their evil heritage. Playing a twisted game of nature vs. nurture, scientists raise some of the clones with loving families and others in abusive circumstances. But everything changes when the most dangerous boys are set free by their creator.

A man with demons of his own, former black ops soldier Shawn Castillo is hot on the clones' trail. But Castillo didn't count on the quiet young man he finds hiding in an abandoned house--a boy who has just learned he is the clone of Jeffrey Dahmer. As Jeffrey and Castillo race across the country after the rampaging teens, Castillo must protect the boy who is the embodiment of his biggest fears--and who may also be his last hope.

"A wild, peek-through-your fingers scare ride" (Paul Tremblay, author of The Little Sleep), Cain's Blood melds all-too-plausible science and ripped-from-the-headlines horror into a stunning work about the potential for good and evil in us all.

Walter Cronkite: a Reporter's Life

"Entertaining . . . The story of a modest man who succeeded extravagantly by remaining mostly himself. . . . His memoir is a short course on the flow of events in the second half of this century--events the world knows more about because of Walter Cronkite's work".
--The New York Times Book Review
A MAIN SELECTION OF THE BOOK-OF THE MONTH CLUB

He has been called the most trusted man in America. His 60-year-long journalistic career has spanned the Great Depression, several wars, and the extraordinary changes that have engulfed our nation over the last two-thirds of the 20th century. When Walter Cronkite advised his television audience in 1968 that the war in Vietnam could not be won, President Lyndon B. Johnson said: "If I've lost Cronkite, I've lost middle America." Now, at the age of eighty, Cronkite has written his life story--the personal and professional odyssey of the original "anchorman" for whom that very word was coined. As a witness to the crucial events of this century--first for the Houston Press, then for the United Press wire service, and finally for CBS in the fledgling medium of television--Cronkite set a standard for integrity, objectivity, enthusiasm, compassion, and insight that is difficult to surpass. He is an overflowing vessel of history, and a direct link with the people and places that have defined our nation and established its unique role in the world. But Walter Cronkite is also the man who loved to drive race cars "for the same reason that others do exhibitionist, dangerous stunts. It sets us apart from the average man; puts us, in our own minds, on a level just a little above the chap who doesn't race." He is also the man whose "softheartedness knows no rational bounds" and who always had "great problems at the theater, tearing up at the slightest offense against animals and people, notably the very old or the very young." He is the man who could barely refrain from spitting on the defendants at the Nuremberg Trials, and who could barely announce President Kennedy's assassination over theair for the sobs in his throat. Walter Cronkite helped launch the juggernaut of television, and tried to imbue it with his own respect for quality and ethics; but now he occupies a ringside seat during the decline of his profession and the ascent of the lowest common denominator. As he aptly observes, "They'd rewrite Exodus to include a car chase." Still, the American people know the difference. They know that for decades they have had the privilege of getting their news from a gentleman of the highest caliber. And they will immensely enjoy A Reporter's Life.

The Kingly Crown: Keter Malkhut

Solomon Ibn Gabirol (1021-1058) of Spain was a Jewish philosopher and moralist who is perhaps best known for the beautiful forty-stanza poem Keter Malkhut (The Kingly Crown). Hailed by scholars as one of the most important classics of Hebrew literature, The Kingly Crown employs the metaphor of a king in his palace to describe the relationship between humanity and God. This medieval poem is full of vivid imagery and scriptural references. Within its many layers of meaning, readers will find not only an extended prayer and meditation, but also signs of the neoplatonic philosophy that formed the foundation of Gabirol's cosmology and theology. The University of Notre Dame Press is pleased to bring back in print Bernard Lewis's lyrical translation of The Kingly Crown. This new edition includes Lewis's extensive notes and introduction as well as a new introduction, notes, and detailed philosophical commentary by Andrew L. Gluck, Gluck's meticulous correction of errors in the Hebrew text makes this the most accurate version ever published with an English translation.

The Kingly Crown, one of the gems of Sephardic liturgy for the High Holidays, is the jewel in the crown of Solomon ibn Gabirol's religious poetry. Bernard Lewis's elegant and lively translation reflects the poetic beauty and grandeur of the Hebrew original as does no other translation I know. Andrew Gluck combines Bernard Lewis's peerless translation with a meticulous scholarly edition of the Hebrew text, adding his own introduction and commentary. He offers a comprehensive survey of the medieval philosophical and mystical environment that constituted the backdrop of Ibn Gabirol's philosophy and religious poetry. This volume is a substantial contribution to the understanding and appreciation of The Kingly Crown. - Henry Toledano, Hofstra University

Abingdon Theological Companion to the Lectionary: Preaching Year A

The Abingdon Theological Companion to the Lectionary gets straight to the point of the Revised Common Lectionary: to allow God's people to encounter the meaning of Scripture through the Word read and proclaimed. For each Sunday or occasion, a homiletician and a theologian have collaborated on commentary that will help preachers create substantive and life-changing sermons. Designed to focus on the deep meaning of the biblical text, and the questions it raises for life as a Christian in the modern world, the Abingdon Theological Companion to the Lectionary begins with the conviction that Scripture speaks first and foremost to Christians now. While informed by the best in biblical studies, its commentary on the Scripture passages of the Revised Common Lectionary engages Christian belief and action in the present day. The Abingdon Theological Companion to the Lectionary will help the preacher to think deeply about the meaning of Scripture and communicate to worshipers the power of Scripture in their daily lives.

Paul Scott Wilson is Professor of Homiletics at Emmanuel College of the University of Toronto. He is one of the most respected and recognized teachers of homiletics in North America. He is the author of a number of books, including The Practice of Preaching, Imagination of the Heart, God Sense: Reading the Bible for Preaching, and The Four Pages of the Sermon, all published by Abingdon Press. He is the General Editor of The New Interpreter's Handbook of Preaching.

The Bridge

The New York Times bestselling author of Learning and Leaving shares a heartwarming Christmas story about a devastating flood, lost love, and the beauty of enduring friendships.

Number one New York Times bestselling author Karen Kingsbury delivers an instant classic with this heartwarming Christmas story about a hundred-year flood, lost love, and the beauty of enduring friendships.

Molly Allen lives alone in Portland, but she left her heart back in Tennessee with a man she walked away from five years ago. They had a rare sort of love she hasn't found since.

Ryan Kelly lives in Nashville after a broken engagement and several years on the road touring with a country music duo. He can still hear Molly's voice encouraging him to follow his dreams; Molly, whose memory stays with him. At least he can visit The Bridge--the oldest bookstore in historic downtown Franklin--and remember the hours he and Molly once spent there.

For thirty years, Charlie and Donna Barton have run The Bridge, providing the people of middle Tennessee with coffee, conversation, and shelves of good books--even through dismal book sales and the rise of digital books. Then in May, the hundred-year flood swept through Franklin and destroyed nearly every book in the store.

Now the bank is pulling the lease on The Bridge. Despondent and without answers, Charlie considers the unthinkable. Then tragedy strikes, and suddenly, everything changes. In the face of desperate brokenness and lost opportunities, could the miracle of a second chance actually unfold?

The Bridge is a love story set against the struggle of the American bookstore, a love story you will never forget.

An Impossible Confession

Miss Helen Fairmead was an innocent in the ways of the world, so her older sister and sensible brother-in-law took great pains to select a perfect suitor for her. His name was Ralph St John and he was everything a proper young lady would want in a gentleman. Lord Adam Drummond, on the other hand, was everything a young lady should avoid. A shocking scandal in his past belied his dashing good looks and devilish charm. It was clear which man Miss Fairmead should choose, especially when St John pressed for her hand in marriage. But though Helen dares not give Lord Drummond even her name, she finds herself longing to give him everything else...

In a Glass

Amuses in a glass are hip and trendy so your dinner party will be fun and entertaining. Amuse comes from the word amuse-bouche, a French term which literally can be translated as 'mouth amuser'. It is a bite-size taster which can be served before or with one of the courses during a meal. Of course, you may find that one or more of the amuses in this book are so nice you just can't stop eating them. Then just go ahead and turn the amuse into a fully fledged starter. Just double or triple the ingredients for the recipe. Serve the amuse with a salad or on a larger plate, with some freshly baked bread, and you have a lovely starter to wow your guests! Besides the 28 amuses you can serve before the meal, there are also 7 which can be served as a dessert. This phenomenon is becoming more and more popular in restaurants as well - they cleanse the palate to prepare the mouth for the sweet dessert that is to follow.

Francis van Arkel develops recipes for cooking magazines and has written several cookbooks as well as working as a food stylist and food consultant.

Newer books about Scientology have been released, but none reproduce the detail and narrative clarity of Atack’s book.” Christian Szurko, DialogCentre UK“Since 1976, I have met, interviewed and counseled countless former officials and ex-members of Scientology. Of everyone I have ever met, and every book I have ever read, Jon Atack is the definitive resource of all things ‘Hubbard.’” Steven Hassan, author Freedom of Mind“When I first read Jon Atack's amazing book A Piece of Blue Sky it was a series of revelations. I had been on the receiving end of the false promises, heavy ethics pressures and greed-motivated financial stresses for decades without being able to reconcile these things with Hubbard's writings. Jon's book gave me considerable relief as to what was really going on behind the facade” Michael Pattinson, ex-OT 8.“As someone who has been at the top of organized scientology, and seen much of what really went on there, I would like to express my appreciation for what Jon Atack has done to get out the truth when it was not safe to do it.” Denise Brennan, former Watchdog Committee Member“Throughout my professional life, I have seen so many victims of poisonous ideologies from communism and scientology to Saddam Hussein’s “return to faith” and Al Qaeda’s “martyrdom”. In my attempts to help those sufferers, I applied a lesson learned from Jon Atack’s writings that freedom cannot be delivered, granted, or enforced. The true and complete freedom comes only with the freedom of mind and Jon Atack’s book is the best guide for all who want to achieve that freedom.” Professor Khapta Akhmedova, expert on terrorism“Honestly written, amazingly accurate, and beautifully assembled, which is why it stood the test.” Gerry Armstrong, former Hubbard aide“This book is fascinating.... and fresh. I've read every expose and this one is on the top of my list.” Paulette Cooper, author The Scandal of Scientology“A Piece of Blue Sky was my first introduction to the real truth about L. Ron Hubbard and Scientology. It's still the most reliable of the many books on the subject. No one seems to have worked harder to get things right by relying so carefully on rare and crucial documents that spell out the history of Scientology's abuses.” Tony Ortega, former editor, Village Voice“All future scholarship on Scientology will build upon his contribution.” Professor Stephen Kent“When I first read A Piece of Blue Sky, it became more than instrumental in helping me to understand my experiences and put them into a meaningful context that changed my life.” Bonnie Woods, ex-OT3“Atack’s book displays mastery of his material and subtlety of analysis and discussion that would be praised at the typical final doctoral examination.” Richard de Mille, ghost author of Hubbard’s Science of Survival“This book delivers like none other. We used it extensively during the fifteen years we helped families retrieve their loved ones from the cult of Scientology, and we still recommend it today to those who want to know the truth about Scientology.” Jerry Whitfield and Hana Eltringham Whitfield

Jon Atack was a ‘public’ Scientologist for nine years. He trained as a counsellor and did the secret ‘OT’ levels, but left when he discovered the criminality which put eleven members, including the founder’s wife, in prison. He spent years interviewing former members, digging out records and unmasking the many false claims of its founder, Ron Hubbard, before publishing A Piece of Blue Sky. Jon is the author of many papers on the subject of Scientology, and has been acknowledged as the leading authority on this subject by academics the world over. Jon has counselled hundreds of former members and survived extensive harassment from Scientology. He has four children, and one grandchild and lives in the heart of England, where, as Voltaire advised, he cultivates his garden.

Ukrainian Epic and Historical Song: Folklore in Context

Ukrainian epic, or dumy, were first recorded from blind mendicant minstrels in the nineteenth century. Yet they reflect events dating back to as early as the 1300's. Ukrainian Epic and Historical Song provides new translations in contemporary English. It also explains the historical events celebrated in epic and other historical songs: fierce battles, rebellion against tyranny, the struggles of captivity, the joys of escape from slavery. Natalie Kononenko's expert translation and analysis of Ukrainian epics provides a sweeping social history of folklore that is vital to Ukrainian identity. A translation of at least one variant of every known epic is included. Whereas earlier trends in folklore scholarship emphasized genre purity and compartmentalization, Kononenko critically examines the events about which songs were sung. Her emphasis on the lives of ordinary people rather than on leaders reshapes our understanding of how epics were composed and performed. Kononenko's ground-breaking analysis also illuminates Ukrainian self-understanding and explains how songs preserve and perpetuate historical memory. Scholars interested in epic song, history, and general folklore will benefit from this work. Members of the Ukrainian diaspora will find new appreciation of Ukrainian folklore.

Natalie Kononenko is a professor in the Department of Modern Languages and Cultural Studies at the University of Alberta and holds the Kule Chair in Ukrainian Ethnography.

Time's Legacy

Barbara Erskine returns with this beautiful and haunting tale of dark forces and mystical powers.

Cambridge, present day: Following the death of her mother, Abi Rutherford receives a mysterious bequest – a misshapen crystal sphere known as the Serpent’s Stone, which gives her glimpses into mysteries long concealed by the church.

Western England, 25 AD: A stranger has come to the chilly Somerset wetlands, with a story of hope and reconciliation. But he is being followed by powerful forces, determined that he will not undermine Roman rule in Britain.

Abi questions what connects these ancient events and her gift. Why do so many people seem desperate to hide the truth?

A dark shadow has fallen across the centuries, and a woman is in fear for her life. But is it danger that awaits her, or the final truth so long whispered across the echoes of time?

Inclinations

Replete with angels and mythical creatures, Inclinations is a strange and allegorical mixture of poetry and prose. Based on a series of mystical and esoteric visions, this collection of short stories and poems covers a wide variety of themes including faith, judgment, mysticism and spiritual warfare. With a bit of prophecy clouded in the metaphor of sacred language, one must decide where to interpret the text literally and where to interpret it figuratively. An Intelligent Person's Guide to Ethics

In this guide to ethics, controversial even before its publication, Mary Warnock debates issues such as abortion, euthanasia, Down's Syndrome, education and genetic engineering, aiming to explain how to distinguish right from wrong. Drawing on examples from her personal and political life, she illustrates difficult cases to make her point and clarify where she stands in a thought-provoking way.

"'This book will serve as an excellent introduction to ethical study, and is also an impassioned and moving summary of Warnock's own lifelong dedication to ethical thinking' Alain de Botton, The Guardian 'This is a wise, earnest, moving book... No wonder the blurb calls it 'controversial'. It must certainly raise eyebrows among the enlightened' Robert Grant, The Times" --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Russian Literature: Overview and Bibliography

Sorry, description is temporarily unavailable.

The great names of Russian literature read like a who's who of great names in the world literature: Dostoyevsky, Tolstoy, Pushkin, Chekhov, Bunin, Pasternak, Solzhenitsyn. But there are only a handful of the legions of extraordinary writers that formed the basis of Russian literature. Russian literature is a rich tapestry reflecting life in a complex world of political turmoil, religious fervour, climate extremes and conditions for daily life which would stupefy the average European or American. This book presents an overview of Russian literature as well as a comprehensive bibliography, including English language sources, accessed by subject, author and titles indexes.

Post-Christendom: Church and Mission in a Strange New World (After Christendom)

The end of Christendom where the Christian story was known and the church was central invites Christians in western culture to embrace marginality and discover fresh ways of being church and engaging in mission. While the transition from modernity to postmodernity has received a huge amount of attention the shift from Christendom to postChristendom has not yet been fully explored. This book is an introduction; a journey into the past an interpretation of the present and an invitation to ask what following Jesus might mean in the strange new world of postChristendom. Drawing on insights from the early Christians dissident movements and the world church this book challenges conventional ways of thinking. For those who dare to imagine new ways of following Jesus on the margins it invites a realistic and hopeful response to challenges and opportunities awaiting us in the 21st century.

Practical Intuition

Unlike the many other specialists who believe that you have to be born with a strong sixth sense, Laura Day proves that anyone, with practice, can become productively intuitive. In Practical Intuition, she shows how her students have used her techniques to unlock the remarkable powers of their minds. They use these techniques to aid in making decisions about every facet of their lives - and now you can, too.

The Captivity of Choice (The Broken Throne)

What stalks within the darkness?

Kira has completed her training, and is ready to take on the duties of an officer, but will she be able to do so? The other officers see her as a curiosity. The men hate her for their defeat. Only the East Carwich guard will follow her, but how long can that last? Worst of all, in the quiet of the night, she is tormented by a dark and malevolent entity that want nothing less than her soul.

Duty comes with a price.

Gidon's feelings for Kira have only grown stronger, but they threaten his ability to lead the men. Surrounded by troops who might turn against him at any moment, and beset by a spy within his own ranks, he must resolve the situation between he and Kira—but how? His feelings are obvious to everyone—everyone except himself. Worse, he is compelled to submit to the man who tortured the woman he loves. His only option is to trust his newest officer, and risk her life. But can he?

A prophet has risen.

Far to the east, a man named Malechi has been hailed as a prophet, and has overthrown an entire city in a popular rebellion. Aesa, the young daughter of its former Patron Lord, has fallen under his spell of emptiness. As she follows him in his quest to submit to the True King, will she lose everything she has ever known? Or will she find that her own life's worth is different than she ever could have imagined?

Shadow will reign.

All paths now lead to Greyrest, where faith, rage, malice and love must eventually collide. Gidon and Kira's futures, and the fate of the world, will turn on the confluence of honor, betrayal, and bloody revenge.

Visionaries, migrants, soldiers, and thieves-Will, as his friends call him, surrounds himself with all of these, and more. Obsessed with "the wisdom of the lowest classes," he views the world as a perennial outsider, in the company of men and women most would not want to meet in a dark alley. His work reflects this, as he winds dramatic irony and sarcasm together with romance and drama to paint a picture of the world that others prefer not to see.William R. Herr was raised on the road, and continues to live there. When not travelling the United States behind the wheel of a tractor-trailer, he can be found in Central Pennsylvania, either writing, editing, or arguing with college students over hot cups of coffee. He lives with his wife and an extremely vocal Irish Stafford-shire Terrier named "The Duke."

If Mama Goes South, We RE All Going with Her

Sorry, description is temporarily unavailable.

With all that women have to do and the many "hats" they wear, it's easy for them to feel like they are "going south" physically, emotionally, or spiritually. And yet, others are depending on them and being influenced by them. So for those women who are running on empty, feeling lonely or weary, Lindsey O'Connor offers an invigorating dose of hope. If Mama Goes South, We're All Goin' with Her looks at five biblical principles from Galatians for overcoming the problems that weigh women down and dilute their influence on others. What does it really look like to "not grow weary in well doing"? Am I really making a difference? Why do I feel alone? These questions, and more, are touched upon with splashes of humor and plenty of personal depth. O'Connor includes a chapter about the delivery of her fifth child, an event that forced her into a ten-week coma, from which she is currently and miraculously recovering.

Night Embrace (The Dark-Hunter World)

Talon was once a Celt warrior cursed by his ancient gods. Following the murder of his sister, the dying Talon had made a deal with the goddess Artemis. He had been given one act of vengeance against the clan who betrayed him, in exchange for his soul and his eternal service as a Dark-Hunter. Talon has sworn to fight Daimons and rescue the human souls they've captured. He has never had cause to regret this choice - until he meets Sunshine Runningwolf.

The unconventional Sunshine should be Talon's perfect woman. She is beautiful, sexy and isn't looking for a long-term commitment. But the more time Talon spends in her company the more he starts yearning for dreams of love and family that he buried centuries ago. But loving Sunshine would be dangerous for both of them - Talon is destined never to know peace or happiness while his enemies still seek to destroy him and everyone close to him...

Say goodbye to the garlic-hating, crucifix-fearing vampires of old. With her steamy, action-packed Dark-Hunter novels, Kenyon is ushering in a whole different class of night dwellers. These new millennium models are gorgeous . . . An abundance of hot sex and snappy dialogue keep the plot both accessible and appealing. With its courageous, unconventional characters and wry humor, this fast-moving fantasy will fill the void left by the end of the "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" series. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Spiritual and Demonic Magic: From Ficino to Campanella: From Fincino to Campanella (Magic in History)

First published by the Warburg Institute in 1958, this book is considered a landmark in Renaissance studies. Whereas most scholars had tended to view magic as a marginal subject, Walker showed that magic was one of the most typical creations of the late fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Walker takes readers through the magical concerns of some of the greatest thinkers of the Renaissance, from Marsilio Ficino, Giovanni Pico della Mirandola, and Jacques Lefevre d'Etaples to Jean Bodin, Francis Bacon, and Tommaso Campanella. Ultimately he demonstrates that magic was interconnected with religion, music, and medicine, all of which were central to the Renaissance notion of spiritus. Remarkable for its clarity of writing, this book is still considered essential reading for students seeking to understand the assumptions, beliefs, and convictions that informed the thinking of the Renaissance. This edition features a new introduction by Brian Copenhaver, one of our leading experts on the place of magic in intellectual history.

"Spiritual and Demonic Magic remains the basis of contemporary scholarly understanding of the theory of magic in postmedieval Europe."--Brian Copenhaver, UCLASpiritual and Demonic Magic remains the basis of contemporary scholarly understanding of the theory of magic in postmedieval Europe. The Trinity: Global Perspectives

Unique for its breadth in studying theologians not only from Europe and North America but also from Latin America, Asia, and Africa, this landmark volume introduces the doctrine of the Trinity, examining the work and thought of contemporary theologians throughout the world. Veli-Matti Karkkainen provides an overview of the biblical roots of the doctrine, discussing both the idea of plurality in God in the Old Testament and the rise of Trinitarian understandings in the New Testament. He details the historical growth of Trinitarian traditions and delves into specific theologies, both Western and non-Western. Also including both an introductory consideration of the doctrine's significance and a concluding assessment and agenda for future thought, Karkkainen's The Trinity is the broadest and most comprehensive contemporary study on the Trinity available.

Veli-Matti Karkkainen is Professor of Systematic Theology at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California. Prior to coming to Fuller, Karkkainen served as President and Professor at IsoKirja College in Finland. He is the author of a number of books including

Frontiers of Hispanic Theology in the United States

With the emerging vitality of the Hispanic church in the United States, the voices of Hispanic theology raise a new and vital challenge. A bridge between the North American church and the liberation theology of Latin America, Hispanic theology reflects on the experience of faith rooted in the cultures, histories, and hopes of the Hispanic people here in the U.S. Frontiers of Hispanic Theology in the United States draws on the key figures and explores the central themes of Hispanic theology, including such issues as popular religion, spirituality, liturgy, Hispanic feminist perspectives, and the meaning of ""mestizaje"" as a source of theological reflection. What emerges is a truly contextual theology, rooted in the unique cultures and tradition of Hispanic Catholics, a theology which also issues a wider challenge to the Anglo church and the world theological community.Jesuit Father Allan Figueroa Deck is Distinguished Scholar of Pastoral Theology and Latino Studies at Loyola Marymount University where he also serves as Rector of the Jesuit Community. 2 Corinthians: An Introduction and Study Guide: Crisis and Conflict (T&T Clark's Study Guides to the New Testament)

This guide considers the historical contexts, the literary forms, thesocial and rhetorical backgrounds, the politics, the theologies, and thereception of 2 Corinthians. Each chapter surveys recent scholarlyapproaches to the text, focussing especially on critical perspectivesthat mesh with our contemporary concerns about gender, identity, raceand class. 2 Corinthians becomes, in the process, less the work of asingle 1st-century writer than a set of fraught, even fracturednegotiations between competing interests and impulses, conducted inPaul's voice. The last chapter brings the letter into conversation withNathaniel Hawthorne's short story 'The Minister's Black Veil' in orderto shift the terms of the critical discussion from what Paul meant tohow Paul means in later cultural moments. Twomey introduces students to the way 2 Corinthians offers a fascinating but fragmentary glimpse into Paul's continuing ties with the Corinthian community. At the same time, Twomey shows how the letter is the site of many new critical challenges to traditional readings of Paul and early Christianity. In contrast to 1 Corinthians, this 2 Corinthians largely eschews the debates and discussions, the interests and concerns of Paul's correspondents. Instead we find Paul engaged in a multi-pronged defence of his ministry in and beyond Corinth. Over the course of thirteen chapters he runs the gamut of the emotions, rhetorically, from tears to joy to biting anger, while struggling to keep his relationship with (some say, his control over) the community intact.

2 Corinthians: Crisis and Conflict is a handy short volume with an excellent bibliography that is a must in any scholarly library and is a useful companion to the typically onerous commentaries on 2 Corinthians Adam White, Review of Biblical Literature

Improving Human Learning in the Classroom: Theories and Teaching Practices

Improving Human Learning in the Classroom provides a functional and realistic approach to facilitate learning through a demonstration of commonalities between the various theories of learning. Designed to assist educators in eliciting students' prior knowledge, providing feedback, transfer of knowledge, and promoting self-assessment, Taylor and MacKenney provide proven strategies for infusing various learning theories into a curriculum, guiding educators to find their own strategies for promoting learning in the classroom. Both quantitative and qualitative research methods investigate learning theories and reforms in education. Quantitative data sources build the theoretical framework for educating the student, as well as developing strategies for closing the achievement gap. Taylor and MacKenney fuse personal experiences with solid strategies for human learning.

Genre and Narrative Coherence in the Acts of the Apostles (The Library of New Testament Studies)

Focusing specifically on the issue of genre methodology in Acts, Bale presents work which will have clear ramifications for the study of biblical texts in general. The first part of the work surveys the state of genre theory in Acts scholarship and demonstrates its inadequacy for both classifying and interpreting Acts. Bale constructs a new genre model rooted in contemporary genre theory, tackling the problematic issue in Biblical scholarship of the relationship between history and fiction in literature. From this theoretical analysis Bale presents a new, pragmatic model for genre which is non-exclusive and heavily intertextual.

In part two Bale utilises the model in three original readings which draw heavily upon parallels from ancient literature. The first reading shows how a specific device at the beginning of Acts dictates interpretation. The second looks at the problem of Paul's status as apostle in Acts from a narrative rather than a propositional perspective. The final reading explores several passages in Acts which may instructively be read as incorporating themes and techniques from ancient comedy and related genres.

This lively monograph should greatly enhance the conversation about the genre of Acts and might well redirect it. * The Journal of Religion *

Chiltern Firehouse: The Cookbook

A cookbook showcasing the food and atmosphere of London's Chiltern Firehouse, a New York-style brasserie drawing praise and patrons from around the world.

London's most fashionable, most talked about restaurant is Chiltern Firehouse, an iconic landmark and destination built in a stunning Victorian-Gothic firehouse in London's Marylebone neighborhood. Owned by hotelier Andre Balazs, whose other properties include the Chateau Marmont and the Mercer Hotel, the exquisitely designed space is overflowing with A-listers every night of the week. What draws them in is the design, but what makes them stay is chef Nuno Mendes's incredible food--crab doughnuts, monkfish cooked over pine, and wood-grilled Iberico pork.

Chiltern Firehous goes behind the scenes with exclusive photography and striking design, delves into the Firehouse's love affair with cocktails, and showcases the acclaimed recipes of Lisbon-born chef Nuno Mendes. Mendes draws on influences from his career split between the United States and Europe to create contemporary dishes with an American accent. With a lush, transporting package, Chiltern Firehouse delivers reimagined classics and bold new flavors, along with the charm of London's hottest restaurant, to America's shores.

The Mystery of Mary

Sorry, description is temporarily unavailable.

The Mystery of Mary by Grace Livingston Hill is often referred to as a Christian romance, one out the one hundred or more books written by the author and inspired from Christian faith. Hill started writing for a living after the death of her first husband when she was left with no financial means and two young children. The Mystery of Mary is a short, but very intensive book. The protagonist is a young man called Tyron who falls in love with a beautiful, but very secretive lady who refuses to share too much information about herself or about the peril she is faced with. The story continues as you can expect of a romance - there is detour, hindrance, there are evil characters trying to rob Mary of her inheritance and to obstruct the course of true love as well, but love prevails in the end and the two young lovers get married. The book is considered to be less centered on Christian values than other books by Grace Livingston Hill, but spirituality is still an important element that makes the novel really special. The other feature that accounts for the book's success is unpredictability - though the plot includes the components that can be expected of a romantic story, they are organized in a succession that is unusual, thus making an eventful story that is not short of suspense and keeps the reader's attention engaged to the very last word.First published in 1912, the novel brought the author success and popularity and it has not ceased to be popular ever since it first came out. If you are looking for a beautifully written, wholesome and old-fashioned love story for yourself or to entertain young girls and get them to like reading, The Mystery of Mary by Grace Livingston Hill is an excellent choice.

Claudius in Britannien.

Satyr Drama: Tragedy at Play

The esteem in which satyr drama was held in antiquity still arouses curiosity and controversy. Twelve new papers, generated in North America by a distinguished cast of scholars, explore questions central to the genre. How did satyr drama relate to comedy and tragedy; how closely was it tied to its tragic trilogy? How did the Athenians react to pro-satyric drama, such as the "Alcestis"? How far did satyr plays reflect contemporary political life? Fresh conclusions are adduced from the fragments, particularly those of Aeschylus, and there is special study of Euripides' Cyclops, not least for its possible reflection of the fifth-century sophists.

"Satyr Drama: Tragedy at Play" is an excellent demonstration and culmination of developments within the discipline, collecting twelve diverse essays that will be important not only for students of satyr drama but of Athenian drama in general.[...]...a welcome addition to satyric studies, both for its breadth and its depth. Contributors address established scholarly issues and point to valuable, new directions for the field. A quick perusal of Harrisons lengthy index reveals the astonishing scope of the volume, and the essays themselves offer a wide range of interesting perspectives and approaches. Individually, the contributions will have considerable impact on studies of Greek drama and culture; collectively, they signify and strengthen satyr dramas importance in modern classical scholarship.'--Carl Shaw"Bryn Mawr Classical Review" (01/01/2007)

When their search for the perfect bride gets them both thrown into Amritsar’s Central Jail, Gursant has to look deep within himself and question everything he has been taught about the Sikh path - Sikhi.Gursant’s encounters with crooked lawyers, corrupt cops and the enigmatic Indian legal system lead him from the radiant spirituality of Amritsar’s Golden Temple, through labyrinthine back streets, chaotic lawyers' offices and the Amritsar Police station to the tranquility of an isolated yoga ashram in the foothills of the Himalayas. On the way, we meet an exotic cast of characters. Some venal and manipulating, others compassionate and generous; all of whom bring to life the contradictions, idiosyncrasies and excitement of 21st Century India.Gursant chronicles his adventures in a fast-moving, warts-and-all style to give the reader a searingly honest picture of his own spiritual loss of innocence. It was during my time in the Amritsar Central Jail that I thought of writing this book. As soon as I had Internet access, I began to research what it might take to create a written record of my experiences. In effect, this book was created as it happened and certainly before I knew how it would finish. My hope was that I could help others to learn from my experiences; not only those in India, but also those within the 3HO spiritual organization to which I devoted thirty years of my life.India can be fun, entertaining and spiritually inspiring; at the same time it can be harsh and unforgiving, especially if you fall foul of the law, as I did.The spiritual path of the seeker can provide endless inspiration and satisfaction. But, like India, it can bring you face to face with your deepest fears and weaknesses. It is my fervent hope that others will learn from my mistakes and perhaps deepen their own spiritual experience by reading about what I had to go through. Thus this book is the story of my spiritual coming of age; my loss of innocence, if you will.I wish to offer my deepest gratitude to Akal Purkh, Waheguru, the Creator and Sustainer of the incredible universe in which we live.Let me also give thanks to Guru Nanak Sahib and his nine illustrious human successors. It is the grace of Guru Nanak that brought me to his teachings and it was his kindness that enabled me to find the true path of Sikhi. Finally I humbly offer obeisance to Siri Guru Granth Sahib, the word of God and living Guru for all Sikhs.Gursant Singh</div><p>I was given the name Guru Sant Singh Khalsa by Yogi Bhajan. The experiences you will read about in "Confessions of an American Sikh" led me to understand that this name inflated my ego and was detrimental to my spiritual progress. I now use the name Gursant Singh and that is the name I have used as the author of this book. Since my name was Guru Sant Singh Khalsa when all the events in the book took place I have kept that name in the text of the book"Confessions of an American Sikh" outlines my reasons for joining Yogi Bhajan’s sect of Sikhism, wearing a turban and all white clothes. As of 2009 I left Yogi Bhajan’s group I now only follow Siri Guru Granth Sahib.First I’ll share some background before you read "Confessions of an American Sikh" which should help you understand my thinking and life.I grew up with strong Christian values of living an honest life and a strong belief in one God. You can see me in photographs on my website at age 12 participating in a Christian church camp.My mother is a devoted Christian and always has been since her childhood days growing up on a mid-west farm, being baptized at and attending the country church every Sunday. My brother and I attended Sunday school, summer bible school for kids, church camps and even Wednesday evening church services sometimes.I do have to say that my father had some tendencies towards being an aggressive salesman but he rarely, if ever crossed the line into fraud or manipulation of others to make money. My dad’s motto was to try and make all buyers happy and provided extensive service and warranties after they purchased their mobile home from him. He was also a committed Christian and served as a Deacon in the Church of Christ on Town Avenue in Pomona California.Thinking that I would like to be a counselor, I drove to Los Angeles where I was determined to ask Yogi Bhajan who I now considered to be my “spiritual teacher” what I should do as a career. Much to my dismay when I shared with Yogi Bhajan my desire to be a counselor, Yogi Bhajan said, “How are you going to make any money, go over to GRD (3HO telemarketing boiler phone room) and work under Hari Jiwan, he’ll teach you how to make money.” So with all the greatest faith and enthusiasm, I worked and studiously observed all the practices of my mentors Hari Jiwan and Baba Singh who lead the infamous 3HO toner bandits. </p> </p> <p> <a href="http://owqnj.stevedowe.me/the_legend_of_deathwalker_0552150819.aspx" > The Legend of Deathwalker </a> </p><p> <div> <b><i>The Legend of Deathwalker</i></b><b> continues the extraordinary tale of Druss among the Nadir started in <i>Legend</i></b><br><br> For centuries the tribes of the Nadir have suffered under the despotic tyranny of their Gothir overlords.
